Asia Cup 2025: A Broad Overview


The 2025 Asia Cup is the 17th edition of this major continental cricket tournament overseen by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). 


It’s being played in the Twenty20 International (T20I) format. 


The host country is the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with matches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. 




Dates: 9 September to 28 September 2025. 


There are 8 participating teams: five full members of the Asian Cricket Council (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan) and three qualifiers (UAE, Oman, Hong Kong).

Tournament Format


The structure of the competition is as follows: 


1. Group Stage: Two groups of four teams each. Each team plays all others in their group. 


Group A: India, Pakistan, UAE, Oman. 


Group B: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka. 




2. Super Four: The top two teams from each group move into the Super Four stage—another round-robin among those four. 



3. Final: The two best teams from the Super Four stage meet in the final on 28 September. 



There are a total of 19 matches in the tournament.

India: Captained by Suryakumar Yadav. Players of note include Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah.

Afghanistan: Rashid Khan captains, plus rising names like Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai.

India vs Pakistan match (14 September) was highly anticipated—politically and cricket-wise. India won by 7 wickets. Bowing pressure was significant, Pakistani innings held to 127, and India chased down with some comfort. 


No handshake controversy: After that India-Pakistan match, there was controversy around the tradition of handshake between teams. Pakistan expressed disappointment. 


Upsets and close finishes:


Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong was a tight match, Sri Lanka winning by 4 wickets. 


Afghanistan beat Hong Kong by a large margin (94 runs) in one of their group stage matches. Strong batting from Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai.
